Whiteman Park Potters Group
Whiteman Park Pottery has been in operation since May 1988 and is a co-operative of potters.
Whiteman Park is a National Park and a tourist attraction located 16km from central Perth. Within the park is "The Village" and it is within this village that the Pottery Gallery/Shop is located.
At the rear of the Pottery is a workshop with kiln, wheels, slab roller, extruder, work bench etc.
While most members work from home, some use the facilities on site. Each member has their own set of shelves to display their work. Vacant shelves are used for one-off pieces or special interest work such as Raku or pit fired pots.
A new "internal exhibition" is set up most months. These may be solo exhibitions, joint exhibitions by all (or some) members, or by an invited guest exhibitor. "
History
Opened in the Whiteman Park Village,May 1988 in a tin shed. A credit to the foundation members in getting the gallery up and running from scratch, making plinths, shelves etc. Although we are now in a purpose built building (shared with the Handcraft Group), we still hold the same values and standards as in previous years.
What do we do
Members make their wares, either at home or in the workshop, for sale in the Whiteman Park Pottery shop.
We are a co-operative with ten members, with eight being active members, who go on roster approximately three times a month in the gallery to handle sales to the public.
We meet on the third Saturday of each month to conduct our meeting, commencing at 9.30am. Every three months, we do a shelf change which requires everyone to be at the shop by 8.30am. It freshens up the place as everything is moved around and dusted. We use this time to discuss issues concerning the club.
Members are welcome to full use of the workshop facilities, and most take advantage of this when on duty, if it is quiet. Members seek permission to work, from the member on roster, as they have priority on the space for the day.
We hold children's classes during every school holidays, usually on Tuesday and Wednesday of each week, with three session times each day. Bookings are needed as it is very popular with the children. Two of our members have police clearances for this purpose.
Casual adult classes are held on a Thursday morning, for two hours on a needs basis. Teacher is Natalie Harrop.
Our shop is located in the Village at Whiteman Park, and we are open from Wednesday to Saturday 10am-4pm, Sundays/Public holidays 10am-5pm. Closed Mondays.
Monthly exhibitions are held in our exhibition area, either by individual members, or a group exhibition following a theme.
Whiteman Park Pottery is seeking new members experienced in the craft, and offer full use of the workshop area and gallery space, along with your own set of shelves to display your work. Membership is a one off payment of $100, with $20 a month rent, to help with expenses associated with running a shop. 20% commission is payable to the club each month from your sales. There is an obligation to do approx 3 rosters a month, with one Sunday in 12 weeks required. We are more than happy to try and accommodate those who have to work full time and can only do weekend rosters.
We can be contacted at the shop during the above opening times on 08 9249 4380 for any information, or alternatively, visit our web site: http://www.whitemanparkpottery.com (currently being updated), or by e-mail on: whitemanparkpottery@gmail.com
