BOOK REVIEW:MIKE KUSNIK'S GUIDE TO CERAMIC TECHNOLOGY
Review: Andrea Vinkovic

Finally, I have long awaited"Mike's Book" in my hands. As I read it, I can see and hear Mike.
For a while I am trying to resist the familiar images in my head as I try to read the book in unbiased manner in order to write an objective review.

But soon I give up. It is impossible for me to separate this book from its author. As I'm reading, I am becoming more aware how fortunate WA potters are to have such a generous and knowledgeable chemist in their midst, leading and inspiring research. His contribution to the development of ceramics in this State can never be overstated and all who have benefited from his generosity know that his Order of Australia is deserved a thousand times over.

He is truly a potter's bard. Bard - as the guardian of tradition, brilliant story teller, learned advocate, truthful historian, imaginative teacher, wise counselor and creative artist. Bards inspire others to reach for their fullest potential and they show us how to tap into our creative being. The Bard strives towards excellence and honours it in others. And if that sounds more like alchemy than chemistry, well so does ceramic technology if you ask me.
But, to get back to the book, although it is organized in methodical and alphabetical order, Mike is always ready to"spread discussions sideways when I feel it might be useful".

So be warned, you will start by looking for some technical information and than find yourself reading with interest several pages more than you had the time for, finding treasures like Pippin Drysdale's glazes, or secrets about bone china. As Mike says:"I hope it will stimulate some potters to do their own thinking to improve their lot". And also, he continues:"When you find a mistake....correct it yourself".
So we shall.
