David Thomson
My work is hand-built. I use slabs and extrusions to make pieces that
have a functional element even if they are used sometimes for a more
sculptural end. I enjoy the endless variety of forms that is possible
with slabs and the way that they can be used as a soft material rather
like draping fabric or left to harden a little so they behave and bend
more like plywood. I am most interested in form and making items that
have a strong and distinctive three-dimensional presence. That said,
the glazing of an item has its own fascination and the many flat
pieces (plates and platters) that I make give me a great opportunity
for exploring the more painterly aspects of the medium. Happs Pottery
has a great tradition and is a convivial work place in a beautiful
location. I am fortunate to work with experienced and generous
colleagues who willingly share their successes so that we all benefit
from each other's development.
