Through the conceptual underpinning of my work I explore the 'female stereotype' in its various guises. I am concerned that `the female stereotype ' like all stereotypes simplifies and trivialises complex identity traits. It is a device on which to hang superficial and prejudicial concepts.
Despite the influence of the women's movement, the colonial view of women as either `Damn Whores or God's Police' still informs the contemporary Australian view of women
I express my concerns through the use of the 'Painted Lady', brightly painted audacious women sculptures referencing utilitarian teapots, jugs and bowls. They provide a metaphorical reference to the duality demanded of women by society - she should be useful as well as beautiful.
My ladies contemplate the women's function and attempt to reference her emotional strength, spiritual aspirations and personal vulnerability.
