Many of you may have already been contacted by our team asking you to pledge hand-made bowls for the up-and-coming Empty Bowls Perth fundraising event. The event takes place on Sunday, 20 August, at Christchurch Grammar School, Claremont, where all money raised goes to Foodbank WA.
For those potters who are not aware of this very worthy cause, here is a brief summary of what the event is all about.
Empty Bowls Perth is an initiative to enable potters to contribute to the community of Perth by making and selling bowls to provide funds for donations to Foodbank WA.
Our objectives are to:
Raise awareness of hunger and Foodbank’s role in fighting hunger in WA.
Increase community involvement.
Fundraise on the day and acquire new donors.
Advocate for arts education.
Empty Bowls Perth has been helping raise money for Foodbank WA for the last ten years or so. Every year we call out to WA potters to make and donate hand-made bowls. People can purchase tickets to the event via the Foodbank website. This ticket allows them to choose a handmade bowl from those displayed on a long table. They can then fill it with hot soup and some bread, and take their bowl home. This takes place over three sittings. They are also welcome to purchase more bowls on the day. All bowls are $25.
The event has become so popular that tickets sell out fast. The total number of bowls we need is estimated between 600-700! If you think you would like to get involved, please register at emptybowlsperth.com or email emptybowlsperthau@gmail.com and let us know the number of bowls you will be donating, even if it is just one.
Last year $24,000 was raised, which is equivalent to 48,000 meals that will help feed West Aussies in need. The event was attended by over 450 people who bought one or more bowls. If you are an individual, any contribution would be graciously received, or if you are a larger group, we welcome your students to pledge bowls.
We will then get in touch and organise pick-up or drop-offs or alternatively, you can drop them off at Potter’s Market if more convenient. All bowls will need to be provided by 7 August 2023.
We also hold an auction which takes place during each sitting. So if you would like to donate a piece of work that you think could raise funds, it would also be much appreciated. You can view on the website last year’s auction pieces. We will promote your work on Instagram leading up to the event.
