Community Kiln Update

An amazing group of volunteers led by Mike Moore and Lee Woodcock have been hard at work building a community kiln at Battistessa Studio, 12 Neuman Road, Herne Hill. The main kiln is now built using salvaged or donated components provided by Bristile and Midland Brick.

The kiln is a wood fired, 4 metre diameter downdraft based on the design of the Ascot kiln in Belmont. It will be able to fire large work and we are planning to use terracotta pots in our first test firing.

On site there is currently a number of new and salvaged, clean kiln shelves for sale at $50. (sizes 600 x 600, 600 x 400, & 400 x 400 – all 20mm thick) If you would like to purchase some kiln shelves or other available refractorys, all income received will be be used for the purchase of ongoing consumables such as sand and cement.

Mike and the team would welcome any other volunteers who are able to assist with the following;

·         Chimney build

·         Installing dampers

·         Insulating wood firing chambers

·         Covering down draft flue

·         Roofing the firing chambers

·         Roofing the entire kiln

·         Roofing wood storage

The project is also in need of donations or recommendations of an economical source for roofing materials.
